My friend asked me to refer her friend's friend to my workplace. When she first brought it up, she
  • was laughing and said something like, "once this person gets hired we're gonna make money." I

  • laughed it off and didn't think she was being serious cause the bonus is 500 which gets taxed.

  • The person got hired and I received the referral bonus, which my company pays directly to

  • the employee who makes the referral. That's when my friend started pushing me for a cut. She told me

  • that since we're friends, I haven't given her anything since she left the company, and basically guilt-tripped me

  • even though her parents have been covering her bills. She had to quit her job for a year but her family fully supported her

  • When I pointed out that other people have asked me to refer someone before and never expected a cut, she said

  • she was expecting a share because she has worked at my company before and knows that I get a bonus. She also

  • giving her a cut again. I only feel this way because if I were to refer someone to my friend and they make money, I wouldn't expect a share of it. AITA here

  • Anxious-Routine-5526 So you received the $500 bonus, paid the taxes on the money received lowering the overall amount you got to keep, and then lowered your amount further by giving your so-called friend a cut? H_Ino.
  • InteractionNo9110 I would suggest to get some conflict resolution training. You gave her money to keep the peace. You know you did not want to do that.
  • You should have shut it down the second she brought it up. I would have said I would be happy to refer her but I won't be sharing a bonus. Since it's taxed. If you would prefer not to help your friend. Then that's fine. Bonus points if you can get the person on a text or email to be sure they know. It's not a friendship its a transaction. I would lose her number immediately.

  • BarneyPoppy She's greedy, don't give her a dime
  • if_im_not_back_in_5 ΝΤΑ You're the one taking a risk, because if the person you were asked to recommend turned out to be a thief or whatever, your name is mud. Tell her to claim from the person who suddenly has an income because you did your part in good faith. Never do anything for that person again.
